Teaching Water Purification At The Basic Level

Typhoid, Jaundice and Diarrhea are some common illnesses that are caused due to contaminated water consumption. To nurture a healthy life and stay physically fit, one must resort to drinking safe, pure and bacteria-free water. More importantly it becomes necessary to educate young children who in their innocence consume unsafe water that could lead to severe health concerns. There are various method and ways of teaching water purification techniques to kids. The education process can be made interactive by adopting practical and experimental learning techniques that make the procedures more interesting and engaging. Following is attention-grabbing water purification teaching methods that can help children understand the beneficial process in an easy and hassle-free manner. This experiment explains evaporation as a water purification technique:

1. Half-fill a bowl with water and add color to it. Make sure it looks undrinkable.
2. Ask the kids to either draw or write about the appearance and taste of that water. Equip them with all necessary stationary.
3. Now place a glass erect on the middle of the bowl.
4. Cover the bowl properly with plastic wrap using rubber band or tape.
5. Place a stone or a small piece of rock on the top of the glass over the plastic.
6. Set the bowl outside in the sun or under a heat lamp. The heat will turn the water to gas but not the food coloring or salt. When the H2O gas hits the cooler plastic, it will condense and turn back into water, dripping back into the glass. Left behind in the bowl will be the salt and food coloring.
7. Repeat this exercise every hour until the glass is filled with enough water.
8. Show the purified glass of water to the kids and make them understand the importance of safe and pure drinking water.
Similarly, various water purification methods can be taught by using concepts of filter, boiling, sand, Chemicals etc.
